How to write a good college research paper: using effective tricks
Keep it simple. There is always the assumption that you get a better mark if you get as much information you know about a subject into your research paper. Don’t listen to this idea, because your paper will end up a complete mess and it will be impossible to find a path way through it, let alone mark it.
- You need to decide on the focus of your paper.
- You can use some of your knowledge to provide some background information for your focus.
- Talk through some of your ideas with your professor.
- Talk with other students.
- The more you talk through your idea, the easier it will be to refine your thought processes and put into words. You should now have your Thesis.
Realism
- Be realistic about the time this is going to take you.
- Make a time line.
- Add in cut off dates and any other important dates.

Note taking
- Keep all your notes in one place, not scribbled pieces of paper that have ended up in the washing machine!
- Use a project diary. This is invaluable no matter how small your project is.
- Keep a track of where your ideas have come from.
- This is going to be an invaluable tool when you are writing your paper.
Outline
- By now you may be ready to produce an outline that you can share with your Professor.
- Make any changes to your outline that have been advised.
- Note which references you are going to be using.

- This is where you set the scene and invite the reader to read the entire document.
- Make sure that the Intro flows - seamlessly.
Body
- Make sure that the ideas flow together.

Draft
- You should read through your draft.
- Leave it for a few days then reread.
